Hugh Bruder - Episode 854 β Behind the Shield Podcast with James Geering
In 2022, Boynton Beach announced a significant shift in its firefighting schedule, moving from a 24-hour on/48-hour off schedule to a 24-hour on/72-hour off schedule. The change aimed to reduce overtime costs and enhance the well-being of public safety workers.
Fast forward to 2023, Chief Hugh Bruder, the interim fire chief and director of fire and emergency medical services, reflects on the progress and benefits of this schedule change. The key points include:
Reduced Overtime Costs: The shift to a 24/72 schedule was expected to cut down on the city's overtime costs significantly. Chief Bruder highlighted the financial benefits of this change, emphasizing a reduction in the need for overtime payments. The initiative demonstrated a proactive approach to managing budgetary concerns.
Enhanced Well-being for Personnel: Chief Bruder emphasized the positive impact on the well-being of firefighters and paramedics. The extended 72-hour off-duty periods allowed personnel more time to decompress, rest, and exercise. The chief believed that this would lead to healthier and happier public safety workers, reducing instances of sick calls and enhancing their ability to serve the community effectively.
Elimination of Kelly Days: The new schedule eliminated Kelly Days, a day off given every three weeks under the previous system. This change was expected to contribute to a reduction in overtime, aligning with the department's goal of optimizing scheduling and staffing.
Recruitment and Retention: The transition to a 24/72 schedule positioned Boynton Beach as an attractive workplace for firefighting professionals. Chief Bruder drew parallels with Boca Raton, highlighting that offering the 24/72 schedule made it a destination workplace. Boynton Beach aimed to quickly earn a similar distinction, potentially making it easier to recruit and retain top talent.
Financial Investment: While there was an initial upfront cost of approximately $2 million for the conversion, Chief Bruder and the City Commission believed that the long-term savings would offset this investment. It was estimated that the city could conservatively save around $1 million annually in overtime costs.
Collaborative Effort: Chief Bruder acknowledged that the successful implementation of the new schedule required collaboration from various stakeholders, including the City Commission, city management, department administration, the bargaining unit, and city staff. The unanimous approval of the new schedule and the ratification of a new three-year contract with the firefighters' union demonstrated a collective commitment to positive change.
In summary, the transition to a 24/72 shift schedule in Boynton Beach showcased a commitment to financial responsibility, improved well-being for public safety workers, and a strategic move to position the city as a desirable workplace within the firefighting profession. Chief Bruder and the involved stakeholders celebrated the positive change as an example of good governance.
Our association represents the interests of our membership, so we suggest strategies to enhance both physical and mental health among our members. Chief Bruder's experience highlights the positive outcomes of such a schedule, ranging from reduced overtime costs and increased operational efficiency to prioritizing the health and happiness of public safety workers. Listen to the podcast as it offers valuable insights into an innovative scheduling approach that not only addresses financial considerations but also underscores a commitment to creating a healthier and more sustainable work environment for firefighters, which aligns with our association's mission and the interests of our members. All this can be heard in the Behind the Shield podcast with James Geering episode 854, available on soundcloud, Apple Music, spotify and the website https://www.jamesgeering.com/ 21 Likes

Dangers of Turkey Fryer
π¨π¨π¨T minus 48 hours before itβs turkey time. π¨π¨π¨
That means you should begin the thawing the big birds today, especially if frying it. Frying a turkey while delicious, crispy, and juicy, (Internal Homer Simpson voice: MMMMM JUICY) but can be very dangerous below are some safety tips so hopefully you donβt have to see us on the holiday.
1. Thaw the turkey completely, a frozen turkey in a fryer can be disastrous.
2. Allow any excess juices to drain away, steam expands 1700 times the volume of the water this is what causes the bubble over fires.
3. Ensure the oil is the appropriate temperature, will cool off when you first put the bird in donβt over compensate with the heat.
4. Use the appropriate amount of oil, DO NOT OVER FILL THE POT, most have markings or follow the directions.
5. Bacon is best cooked on a cookie sheet, at 350 degrees until done to your crispiness, donβt spill the grease, that is liquid gold for cooking.
As always, Evesham Township Evesham Township Professional Firefighters Association - IAFF Local 4687 would like like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving Holiday. 4 Likes

At 2:00PM on Sunday 11/12/23, Your Evesham Township Professional Firefighters responded to a Structure Fire on Kent Ave. Quint 2235 arrived first due with smoke showing from the chimney and underside of the roof. Mutual aid partners from Mount Laurel Professional Firefighters Local 4408, arrived quickly after 2235, followed by Medford Township Dept of Fire & EMS, Engine 2211, and Moorestown Fire Dept. Crews operated quickly to extinguish the fire and prevent further damage to the residence. No injuries were reported and crews worked for approximately 2 hours before returning available for service.
Compared to βlegacyβ fires of the past, fires today burn significantly hotter, faster, and produce much more toxic smoke. For these reasons, every second counts in the response of the fire department. The two biggest factors in a quick response are early notification of 911 and having staffed fire stations. Incidents like this highlight the need for 24/7/365 staffed fire stations.
